Malawi village's water crisis: Humans, animals share contaminated streams
Abida Sidik Mia, parliamentarian for Chikwawa Nkombezi and Water and Sanitation Minister, said she's unaware of these issues.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi — Group Village Headman Therere from Senior Chief Ngabu's area in Chikwawa has raised alarm over the lack of clean water, fearing an outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
"Villagers from Demanyumva, Chamanga, Kutama, Mose, just to name a few, are using stream water which is not safe for human consumption," Therere told reporters Friday.
He noted that locals are sharing water with animals in Phwadzi and Chang'ang'ombe streams.
The area also grapples with security issues.
"Theft is rampant despite the construction of a police unit," Therere added.
Abida Sidik Mia, parliamentarian for Chikwawa Nkombezi and Water and Sanitation Minister, said she's unaware of these issues.
"Communities should contact my Personal Assistant Leo Mkhuwala with challenges," she advised.
Meanwhile, parliamentary aspirant Ben Khuleya pledged to use personal resources to address water, health, and road network problems in the constituency.
