Malawi University Expands Access with Online Degrees, Global Ties
The move positions LUANAR as a leader in Malawi’s push to make higher education more accessible and relevant in a rapidly changing world.
MZUZU, Malawi — Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is broadening its educational reach through innovative online programs and international partnerships, officials announced Friday during International Day of Education celebrations in Mzuzu, writes Tionge Hara.
Patricia Ngwale, LUANAR’s Acting Marketing and Communications Manager, said the university’s collaboration with U.S.-based Astria Learning has enabled it to offer fully online postgraduate degrees in fields such as sustainable agriculture, agribusiness management, and climate change.
“This initiative is about breaking barriers,” Ngwale said.
“We’re reaching students who cannot attend traditional classes due to work or family commitments.”
The programs, launched in March, include virtual labs to replicate the hands-on experience of physical classrooms.
Ngwale emphasised that the partnership with Astria Learning, which also works with institutions in Zambia and Malawi, aligns with LUANAR’s goal of internationalisation.
“Collaborations like these are essential for growth,” she said.
“They bring global expertise to our local context.”
The announcement came during an event at Katoto Secondary School, where LUANAR showcased its contributions to education.
Ngwale noted that the International Day of Education serves as a reminder of the transformative power of learning.
“Education is not just a privilege; it’s a right,” she said.
“We’re proud to be part of this global celebration.”
The move positions LUANAR as a leader in Malawi’s push to make higher education more accessible and relevant in a rapidly changing world.
