Malawi Tourism Ministry Plans Projects to Boost Likoma District Appeal
These efforts underscore the government's commitment to diversifying Malawi's economy and capitalizing on the country's natural attractions to boost tourism revenue.
LIKOMA ISLAND, Malawi— The Ministry of Tourism in Malawi has announced plans to implement various projects aimed at promoting tourism in Likoma District, a prime area for both international and domestic visitors, writes Oliver Malibisa.
Joseph Nkosi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, told reporters, "The government is looking forward to developing various tourism centers that will attract both international and domestic tourists."
Nkosi added that the ministry has begun training tour guides in other districts across the country, with plans to extend this initiative to Likoma.
The government is also seeking potential public-private partnerships to invest in the tourism industry to optimize resource utilization.
Yusuf Asima, chairperson of the Tour Guide Association, highlighted challenges facing the sector. "Lack of skills and knowledge on how to carry out our duties is affecting us," Asima said.
The push for tourism development in Likoma aligns with promises made by President Lazarus Chakwera during a political rally in the district in October 2023.
Chakwera pledged that his government would promote the tourism industry through various activities.
These efforts underscore the government's commitment to diversifying Malawi's economy and capitalizing on the country's natural attractions to boost tourism revenue.
