Malawi to Host Inaugural Mining Investment Forum
The two-day "Malawi Mining Investment Forum" will take place from April 23-24 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, the capital city.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi is set to host its first-ever mining investment forum, aiming to showcase the country's mineral resources and attract potential investors to the sector, writes Moses Nyirenda.
The two-day "Malawi Mining Investment Forum" will take place from April 23-24 at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, the capital city.
Addressing journalists on Friday, Mining Minister Monica Chang'anamuno said preparations for the event are complete, with invitations extended to participants from Malawi and abroad.
"We are prepared for the forum; we have already sent invitations to the participants both from Malawi and outside Malawi," Chang'anamuno said.
"This forum is going to benefit the country a lot because it is going to unearth the potential that is there within the country so that a lot of investors in the mining sector can come and invest in our country."
The minister added that the forum will feature discussions about mining, providing insights for industry players on potential opportunities and areas for investment in Malawi.
"The forum will be able to provide information that investors need so that they know what we have in Malawi," Chang'anamuno said.
"We have a lot of minerals, and it is important that investors should know the kinds of minerals that we have so that they can come to explore and be able to mine these minerals."
Malawi is endowed with various mineral resources, including rare earth elements (REEs), graphite, uranium, gold, and gemstones, among others.
Chang'anamuno encouraged individuals, companies, and stakeholders in the mining sector to participate in the upcoming forum, which will provide a platform for learning, sharing ideas, and exploring potential partnerships and investments.
The government hopes the inaugural mining investment forum will position Malawi as an attractive destination for mineral exploration and mining activities, contributing to economic growth and development.
Experts and industry analysts have emphasized the importance of responsible and sustainable mining practices, ensuring that any investments in the sector prioritize environmental protection, community engagement, and equitable distribution of benefits.
