Malawi to Host Crucial LDC Climate Strategy Meeting Ahead of COP29
The meeting will culminate in the Lilongwe Declaration, outlining the group's unified position for COP29.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi will host a crucial climate strategy meeting for the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group from Aug. 26-28, bringing together high-level representatives from 45 nations to shape their approach for upcoming global climate talks, writes Winston Mwale.
The gathering at the Bingu Wa Mutharika International Convention Centre will focus on reviewing progress in international climate negotiations and crafting strategies for the COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Under the theme "Uniting for 1.5°C – Aligned Climate Action and Resilient Futures," participants will tackle key issues including climate finance, carbon trading rules and addressing loss and damage from climate impacts.
Evans Njewa, chair of the LDC Group, emphasized the meeting's importance.
"This gathering represents a crucial moment in our unified efforts to achieve an ambitious outcome at COP29," Njewa said.
"Our goal is clear: to set an ambitious new goal for climate finance that reflects the needs of our countries, to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C and bolster resilience in our most vulnerable nations."
The meeting will culminate in the Lilongwe Declaration, outlining the group's unified position for COP29.
This follows technical sessions held in March and recent U.N. climate talks in Bonn, Germany.
The LDC Group represents over one billion people from countries highly susceptible to environmental and economic shocks.
Their collective aim is to advance a fair and ambitious global response to climate change.
