Malawi to Hire 4,200 Temporary Teachers to Address Education Needs

LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi's Ministry of Education plans to recruit 4,200 Auxiliary Teachers on one-year contracts through the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP), a ministry spokesman said, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Mphatso Nkuonera, Public Relations Officer for the ministry, confirmed that the teachers will be selected from Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) cohorts 14, 15, and 16. They are expected to report to their assigned schools on September 1, 2024.
"Honoraria for auxiliary teachers post has been adjusted with a 50% increase from K80,000:00 to K120,000:00 per person per month," Nkuonera said.
The initiative aims to reduce the learner-to-qualified teacher ratio across the country. Nkuonera emphasized that the temporary contracts do not guarantee permanent employment.
"The engagement of the auxiliary teachers is on a temporary contract and it does not mean that they will be automatically recruited on permanent basis at the expiry of their contract," he added.
This teacher recruitment is part of the broader MERP project, which includes constructing 10,900 classrooms and 1,000 sanitation blocks nationwide, training school leadership, engaging learner mentors, and providing school improvement grants.
MERP is jointly funded by the Malawi Government, World Bank, and Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
