Malawi to Hire 3,000 Police Officers for 2025 Election Security

LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi government plans to employ over 3,000 police officers to bolster security for the 2025 general elections, officials said Tuesday, writes Esther Banda.
Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma announced the initiative during a visit to the Central West Region Headquarters in Lilongwe.
"Despite the government's efforts to employ police officers, the number is still low," Ng'oma said. "We need to reach international standards to ensure free and fair general elections."
Ng'oma praised recent improvements in the Malawi Police Service, citing a reduction in criminal cases nationwide. He also emphasized the government's commitment to officer welfare.
"Our officers are doing a great job across the country," he said. "As government, we are committed to providing them with everything they need to discharge their duties."
Emmanuel Soko, Commissioner of Police for the Central West Region, pledged continued professionalism in his force's operations.
"The minister's visit has demonstrated the government's commitment to improving the welfare of police officers in the country," Soko said.
