Malawi Suffers 4-0 Defeat to Senegal in AFCON Qualifying Match

DAKAR, Senegal — Malawi's national football team, the Flames, suffered a 4-0 defeat to Senegal in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match Friday at Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade, writes Happy Valirani.
Pape Gueye opened the scoring for Senegal in the 34th minute.
Sadio Mane doubled the lead in the 68th minute, followed by goals from Boulaye Dia and Nicolas Jackson in the 70th and 76th minutes, respectively.
Malawi's goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali, received a red card 16 minutes into the game for a foul on Mane.
Coach Patrick Mabedi substituted George Chikooka for Munthali and removed Patrick Mwaungulu.
The loss severely damages Malawi's chances of qualifying for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Flames remain winless after three games, anchoring Group L without a point.
Burkina Faso leads Group L, level on seven points with second-placed Senegal but with a superior goal difference. Burundi is third with three points.
