Malawi Spelling Bee Champs Set Sights on African Competition in Nigeria
As Malawi's young spellers prepare for the continental stage, their confidence and determination reflect growing ambitions in the country's educational landscape.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Winners of the Malawi National Spelling Bee Grand Finale expressed their determination to excel at the upcoming African Spelling Bee competition, scheduled for December 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria, writes Martin Kamlaike.
Nicole Manguluti, 13, from Sir Harry Johnston International School in Zomba, who clinched the top spot in the senior category, voiced her optimism.
"My mentality is very positive, and I believe we're going to go there and show the entire Africa what Malawi is truly made of," she said.
Zacheus Blessings Sinyangwe from Zolozolo Primary School in Mzuzu, winner of the Rural Junior category, shared his coach's confidence: "I think Malawi will win this year, we will do better."
Jordan Mayankho Kowet, 13, from Southend Primary School in Blantyre, who won the Urban Junior category, emphasized his satisfaction with his hard work and measured expectations for the continental competition.
Lewis Mbaula Chisale, CEO of Malawi National Spelling Bee, highlighted the competition's growth, noting increased participation with over 18,000 children competing this year.
He also praised the improved performance of rural participants, stating, "You can't even differentiate between the rural kids and urban kids."
Chisale announced plans for a two to three-week training camp before the Nigeria trip to further prepare the competitors.
The top three winners in each category received cash prizes totaling 2 million Malawian Kwacha, courtesy of Bata Shoe Company and Chibuku Products, along with shopping vouchers.
This year's national competition featured 75 spellers from 50 schools across Malawi.
The top two winners from each of the three categories will represent the country at the African Spelling Bee in Nigeria.
