Malawi Receives $525 Million Global Fund Grant for TB/HIV and Malaria Programs
The official launch of the Global Fund Grant is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, 2024, byState President Lazarus Chakwera.
Lilongwe, Malawi - The Global Fund has approved a grant of USD 525,146,345.00 for TB/HIV and Malaria programs in Malawi, covering the period from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027, the country’s Ministry of Health announced, writes Winston Mwale.
The grant will support the Ministry of Health’s efforts to combat these diseases and build a more resilient health system.
The grant includes USD 442,683,000 for TB/HIV programs and USD 84,463,345 for Malaria programs, and will be implemented through a combination of government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners.
The funding will be used for a variety of activities, including:
TB/HIV Programs:
HIV Treatment, Care, and Support: The grant will support the provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV prevention services, and care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
TB Diagnosis and Prevention: Funding will be used to improve the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), including the provision of preventive therapy for high-risk individuals.
Strengthening Health Systems: The grant will support efforts to strengthen the national health system to ensure that TB and HIV services are accessible to all who need them.
Human Rights and Gender Equality: The grant will promote human rights and gender equality in all aspects of the TB/HIV response, including addressing gender-based violence and promoting women's empowerment.
Malaria Programs:
Vector Control: Funding will support efforts to control mosquito populations, which are the primary vectors of malaria.
Case Management: The grant will improve the diagnosis and treatment of malaria, including providing access to effective antimalarial drugs.
Prevention Package: The grant will support efforts to prevent malaria, including the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and other preventive measures.
Key and Vulnerable Populations: The grant will provide targeted interventions for key and vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, children under five, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
The grant also includes a portion specifically for the World Vision TB/HIV Grant.
This component of the funding is designed to support community response initiatives, including community-based health services, and to build resilient health systems.
The Global Fund grant represents a significant investment in Malawi's health system and underscores the commitment of international partners to support the country in its fight against these major health challenges.
