Malawi Queens Prepare for Vitality Netball World Cup Preliminaries Stage 2
The Malawi Queens gear up to face Australia in the Vitality Netball World Cup preliminaries stage 2 in Cape Town.
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — The Malawi National Netball Team, known as the Queens, is ready to take on Australia in the Vitality Netball World Cup preliminary Stage Two, writes Happy Valirani.
The Queens, who recently defeated Barbados 84-48, have been drawn in Pool F alongside Australia, Tonga, Fiji, England, and Scotland.
As they prepare for their upcoming match against Australia on Tuesday, Mwawi Kumwenda, a key member of the Malawi Queens, has emphasised the importance of focus and hard work within the team.
Having spent a significant amount of time in Australia, Kumwenda has shared her knowledge of the Australian team's strengths and weaknesses with her teammates.
"We will be playing against Australia on Tuesday, Australia is a good team, and I have been in Australia for quite a long time. I know their type of play and three of the players that are on their team, we played together in Australia," said Kumwenda.
The Vitality Netball World Cup preliminaries stage 2 comprises three pools: Pool F with Malawi, England, Scotland, Fiji, Australia, and Tonga; Pool G with Jamaica, South Africa, Wales, New Zealand, Uganda, and Trinidad and Tobago; and Pool E with Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Barbados.
The Malawi Queens begin their stage 2 journey by facing Fiji on Monday, July 31.
This will be followed by their highly anticipated match against Australia on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
The team is eager to maintain their winning form and hopes to bring their best results with the support of their fans.
"As one of the players who has been with the team for quite a long time and is still playing, I find it necessary to encourage and motivate my teammates to work hard and focus ahead of the upcoming games. I also urge Malawians to continue with the support they are giving us. We, as girls, promise to bring the best results," added Kumwenda.
