CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — The Malawi National Netball Team, known as the Queens, emerged victorious 56-51 in a close match against Tonga at the ongoing Vitality Netball World Cup tournament held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, writes Happy Valirani.
Despite a slow start, the Queens managed to rally back in the second quarter, outscoring Tonga with 18 baskets to their 13.
The momentum continued as Malawi dominated both the second and third quarters, maintaining a comfortable lead.
Joyce Mvula showcased her skills with impressive shots, ensuring Tonga had no chance of a comeback.
Towera Vinkhumbo's outstanding performance earned her the title of player of the match.
Looking ahead, the Queens will face Uganda in another anticipated contest.
The winner of this match will compete for positions 6 and 5 against the winner of the South Africa vs. Tonga game.
The losers of these matches will vie for positions 7 and 8 in the tournament, with the fixtures scheduled for Sunday, August 6.
England, New Zealand, Australia, and Jamaica have all advanced to the semi-finals of the 2023 Vitality Netball World Cup.
