Lilongwe, Malawi — Malawi President, Lazarus Chakwera, has encouraged Mr Kimani Rugendo, founder and chairman of Kevian Kenya Limited, to consider investing in Malawi's fruit farming industry, writes Winston Mwale.
The president met with Rugendo while in transit in Kenya on his way home and was accompanied by anti-corruption advocate Professor PLO Lumumba.
Chakwera urged Rugendo to consider Malawi as his next investment destination, highlighting the large contingent of fruit farmers across the country whose abundant yield is a readily-available raw material in agro-processing operations.
"I have urged Mr Rugendo to consider Malawi as his next investment destination because we have a large contingent of fruit farmers across the country whose abundant yield is a readily-available raw material in the agro-processing operations," Chakwera said.
The president was pleased to learn that Rugendo had expressed interest in exploring the Malawian market to see where his venture could make a positive difference, and was also considering bringing on board other Kenyan private sector players to follow suit.
"My administration will continue putting in place investment-friendly policies to create a conducive environment for business growth, increased exports leading to more forex, job creation, and better livelihoods for Malawians," Chakwera added.
Chakwera's call for investment in Malawi's fruit farming industry aligns with his administration's efforts to promote agriculture as a key driver of the country's economic growth.
