Malawi President Swears in New High Court Justices, Urges Fair Rulings

LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera presided over the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed High Court justices on Monday, emphasizing the importance of fair and evidence-based rulings, writes Winston Mwale.
The president underscored the significance of this expansion to the judicial system, stating, "This addition to the judicial system brings to light our commitment to promote Rule of Law as a bedrock of good governance."
Chakwera advised the new justices to prioritize fairness and factual evidence in their duties.
"I have advised the new High Court justices to always uphold what is fair according to law and what is factual according to evidence in their discharge of duties," he said.
The president also stressed the importance of maintaining high standards within the judiciary.
"Their task is to advocate best practices as entailed by Judiciary standards on top of other personal attributes like good systemic organisation and temperament," Chakwera noted.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening the judicial framework, stating,
"We remain dedicated to coordinate with relevant authorities in the appointment of adequate personnel within the Judiciary framework to ensure that the conveyor of Malawi's justice is always moving in a timely and unbiased manner."
The ceremony marks a significant step in Malawi's efforts to bolster its judicial system and uphold the rule of law.
