Malawi President Seeks Stronger Diplomatic Ties and Investment from China
President Lazarus Chakwera discusses bilateral engagements and financial assistance opportunities during his visit to China.
BEIJING, China: Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera met with the Right Honourable Han Zheng, Vice President of the People's Republic of China, on Wednesday as part of their sideline bilateral engagements at the 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, writes Winston Mwale.
The meeting focused on strengthening diplomatic ties, boosting trade, and attracting more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Malawi's economy.
President Chakwera expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Chinese government and conveyed his country's keen interest in deepening the relationship between Malawi and China.
In his discussions with Vice President Han Zheng, he emphasised the importance of financial assistance to drive much-needed socioeconomic development in Malawi.
During the meeting, President Chakwera highlighted several key development projects that require financial support from China.
These projects include the construction of the Lambilambi Dam, the implementation of the Lilongwe Water Programme, and the establishment of the Lower Fufu Hydro-electric Power Plant.
These initiatives aim to address critical infrastructure needs and foster sustainable economic growth in Malawi.
President Chakwera expressed his optimism about the ongoing talks and reiterated his commitment to exploring further opportunities for comprehensive trade collaboration between China and Malawi.
He stressed the potential for both nations to benefit from increased trade and investment cooperation.
"We believe that strengthening our diplomatic ties and expanding our trade relations with China will greatly contribute to the growth and prosperity of Malawi. We are grateful for the receptive response and support we have received so far," President Chakwera remarked.
The discussions between President Chakwera and Vice President Han Zheng will continue over the next few days, with the aim of exploring the vast potential for bilateral cooperation and identifying new areas of economic collaboration between Malawi and China.
The 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo serves as a platform to enhance economic and trade ties between China and African countries.
It brings together government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to foster mutually beneficial partnerships and explore new avenues of growth.
