Malawi President Launches Linga Mega Farm to Tackle Hunger and Poverty
This initiative, a cornerstone of Malawi's commitment to agricultural transformation, is poised to reshape the nation's farming landscape.
Nkhata Bay, Malawi - In a momentous step towards “eradicating hunger and poverty”, Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera inaugurated the Linga Mega Farm in Nkhata Bay on Friday, writes Winston Mwale.
This initiative, a cornerstone of Malawi's commitment to agricultural transformation, is poised to reshape the nation's farming landscape.
The Linga Mega Farm project has already set more than 800 rice and bean farmers into motion, engaging in irrigation farming across an extensive 450-hectare expanse.
President Chakwera expressed his contentment that, once fully operational, the farm will encompass nearly 1,500 hectares, significantly amplifying its reach and impact.
Beyond its agricultural significance, the Linga Mega Farm initiative addresses the pressing issue of youth unemployment. In tandem with complementary programs such as fisheries, honey production, and livestock farming, this undertaking has become a source of livelihood for hundreds of local young people.
President Chakwera underscored the transformative role of mega-farms in advancing the commercialization of agricultural production in Malawi.
The country's Vision 2063 underscores agriculture as a key driver of socioeconomic transformation and self-sufficiency.
Enhancing agricultural productivity is, therefore, pivotal in the fight against poverty and the promotion of economic growth.
The President revealed that the government's commitment to agricultural development will extend to launching additional mega-farms across the country in the coming months.
This bold step underscores the administration's determination to achieve its objectives and reshape Malawi's agricultural sector.
