Lilongwe, Malawi — President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi welcomed an esteemed delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Kamuzu Palace, led by the First Deputy Manager, Ms. Gita Gopinath, writes Winston Mwale.
The purpose of this visit by the IMF delegation is to gain insight into Malawi's ongoing economic recovery efforts, which have been undertaken in the face of various challenges, including natural disasters and geopolitical instability in Eastern Europe.
President Chakwera expressed his gratitude for the trust that the IMF has bestowed upon his administration, recognising the tough and courageous decisions taken to revive the country's economy.
The President acknowledged that the multilateral development bank has affirmed its commitment to assisting Malawi in finding solutions to current economic difficulties while ensuring satisfactory credit sustainability.
During the meeting, President Chakwera conveyed Malawi's unwavering determination and commitment to fostering economic growth and establishing sustainable communities in alignment with the Malawi Vision 2063 agenda.
He expressed optimism regarding the ongoing discussions between the IMF mission and key Malawian institutions, including the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the Ministry of Finance, and their potential to lead to the clarification of a new Extended Credit Facility.
