Malawi President Attends 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo
President Lazarus Chakwera leads Malawi delegation to engage in economic and trade initiatives at the prestigious China-Africa Expo.
Lilongwe, Malawi - In a significant development for diplomatic and economic relations, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera announced on Tuesday that he and the First Lady will be travelling to China to attend the 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE), writes Winston Mwale.
The President says he has been invited as the Guest of Honour at the Expo, set to take place from Thursday, June 29, to next week Monday, July 2, in Changsha, Hunan Province.
Themed "Common Development for a Shared Future," the biennial event is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Hunan Province.
It aims to foster stronger ties and promote economic cooperation between China and African nations.
President Chakwera emphasised the importance of Malawi's participation in the expo, stating, "Malawi is attending the expo to implement a range of economic and trade initiatives and engage in deeper collaboration with China and the rest of the stakeholders."
The President's visit seeks to explore various areas of cooperation, including medical and health, poverty reduction, agricultural development, trade promotion, investment promotion, digital innovation, green development, capacity building, cultural exchange, and people-to-people interaction.
Additionally, he intends to discuss matters of peace and security.
During his visit, President Chakwera plans to advocate for Chinese support in Malawi's debt restructuring plan, which aims to enhance the country's debt sustainability.
This opportunity will allow him to engage with his Chinese counterparts and discuss strategies for alleviating Malawi's debt burden while pursuing sustainable economic growth.
The President's attendance at the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo signifies Malawi's commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships with China and other stakeholders.
