LUSAKA, Zambia— Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera arrived in Lusaka on Thursday to participate in the 22nd Summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Authority of Heads of State and Government, writes Winston Mwale.
The summit, held under the theme "Economic Integration for a Thriving COMESA, Anchored on Green Investment, Value Addition, and Tourism," aims to align Malawi's national development blueprint, Malawi Vision 2063, with regional economic and trade opportunities.
During the summit, President Chakwera intends to advocate for increased support for Malawi's recovery and reconstruction efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy.
The president emphasises the importance of green investments in all key sectors as a means to mitigate climate change-related disasters.
By fostering sustainable development through trade and tourism, Malawi seeks to create a conducive environment for economic growth both locally and within the region.
President Chakwera expressed his enthusiasm for the summit, stating, "The choice of the theme perfectly speaks to Malawi's need for more green investments in all key sectors. This is the surest way to mitigate against climate change-related disasters."
He further emphasized the significance of aligning national aspirations with regional economic and trade opportunities to accelerate Malawi's development agenda.
