Malawi Police Boss Lauds 2023 Performance
Officers lobbied for more housing, vehicles and personnel.
MANGOCHI, Malawi— Malawi’s inspector general of police expressed satisfaction with her force’s effectiveness in 2023 while visiting three remote stations this week, writes Francis Polinyu Banda.
Merlyn Nachulu Yolamu highlighted recoveries of dozens of stolen rifles and other contraband over the past year as evidence that Malawi’s police are achieving their mission.
She also noted a peaceful festive period free of high-profile crimes.
“I’m receiving a lot of compliments from the general public expressing their satisfaction with our work, and I attribute these efforts to you,” Yolamu told assembled officers Tuesday in Mangochi district.
Nonetheless, the IG encouraged maintaining productive ties with communities and collaborating with other security agencies to further improve safety outcomes.
Yolamu conducted individual staff inspections and heard grievances around scarce resources at Masuku, Chiponde and Namwera posts as part of her first field engagements in 2024.
Officers lobbied for more housing, vehicles and personnel.
Yolamu vowed new government investments were coming to upgrade living conditions for rural police and mobility for patrols.
Eastern Region police commissioner Violet Magwaya, on hand for the visits about 300 miles (480 kilometers) from Lilongwe, thanked the IG for offering strategic encouragement.
District law enforcement leadership echoed appreciation.
