Malawi platform urges community integration for drug users, not punishment
The meeting aimed to raise awareness about the "Support, Don't Punish" campaign facilitated by the International Drug Policy Consortium.
KARONGA, Malawi— The Drug Policy and Harm Reduction Platform (DPHRP) in Malawi is calling for the integration of drug users into society rather than their punishment or exclusion, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Undule Mwakasungula, DPHRP chairperson, made this appeal Friday during an engagement meeting with civil society organizations and media in Karonga district.
The meeting aimed to raise awareness about the "Support, Don't Punish" campaign facilitated by the International Drug Policy Consortium.
"Stigmatization and exclusion of drug users only exacerbate their problems," Mwakasungula said.
"This approach not only benefits the individuals directly affected but also enhances public health and safety by reducing the harms associated with drug misuse."
Gwyneth Kaponda from Karonga Debate Club emphasized the need for collaboration.
"By working together, stakeholders can create an environment that fosters rehabilitation and reduces the negative impacts of drug use," she said.
Lusungu Mzembe, a participant from Tuntufye Radio, noted that the meeting was eye-opening for media members, as drug and substance abuse issues often receive inadequate coverage.
The engagement comes ahead of World Drug Day on June 26, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987 to raise awareness about the societal problems posed by illicit drugs.
