GABORONE, Botswana - Malawi's table tennis champion Stewart Hara is calling for increased support from the government and corporate sponsors to elevate the sport within the country, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
He made this appeal after a commendable performance at the recent Phoenix Assurance Botswana table tennis tournament.
Hara, representing Malawi at the regional event, showcased consistency despite being knocked out in the quarterfinals by South Africa's Cheta Natho, securing a 1000 Pula prize.
In an interview, he expressed pride in his performance, highlighting the challenges of the tournament.
Beyond personal achievement, Hara emphasizes the significance of such tournaments in nurturing talent, fostering sport's growth, and encouraging community participation.
"Securing sponsorship," he states, "would significantly advance my career and others', helping promote and sustain table tennis, especially in schools and communities. With the necessary support, I believe I can achieve much more."
The Phoenix Assurance Botswana tournament, held from December 10-12 at Botho University, brought together competitors from Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, and host Botswana.
