MCHINJI, Malawi — In a bid to bolster health sector initiatives and address potential health crises, Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daud has called upon newly sworn-in Peace Corps volunteers to dedicate their efforts to this critical cause, writes Abraham Bisayi.
Deputy Minister Daud made this appeal during a swearing-in ceremony for eight Peace Corps Malawi volunteers held at Mkanda parish in Mchinji.
She emphasized the importance of their work, which encompasses health, education, and environmental projects, aligning with the global priorities outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
"Under the leadership of President Lazarus Chakwera, the Malawian government appreciates the continued commitment of Peace Corps in our country, despite the previous challenges posed by COVID-19, cholera outbreaks, and numerous natural disasters, including the recent Cyclone Freddy," stated Daud.
"I commend them for their choice and dedication to serving both Malawi and their home country as Peace Corps volunteers. They should also serve as ambassadors for Malawi."
His Excellency David Young, United States Ambassador, reiterated the enduring partnership between the United States and Malawi.
He affirmed that the U.S. would continue to send Peace Corps Volunteers to contribute to various sectors, ultimately enhancing service delivery.
"The collaboration between Malawi and the United States, spanning over 60 years, has significantly contributed to the well-being of countless Malawians," Ambassador Young emphasized.
Since 1963, when the Malawian government requested Peace Corps assistance, more than 3,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have dedicated their service to the Warm Heart of Africa.
The volunteers underwent an eleven-week training program focused on language proficiency and immersion in Malawian culture within the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Mkanda in the Mchinji district.
