Malawi NGO Launches Drive to Support 400 Orphans' Education
The fundraising campaign will culminate with a charity walk on May 30 involving all stakeholders. Orphans of Africa is also accepting online donations for the drive.
MZIMBA, Malawi- Orphans of Africa Foundation, a community-based organization in Mzimba North, has kicked off a campaign aiming to raise K10 million to provide 400 orphaned students with school essentials like uniforms, textbooks and fees, writes Lumbani Kaunda.
The drive, launched Thursday at Njakwa Primary School, targets supporting orphans across six primary schools in the Bwengu area who are at risk of dropping out due to lacking basic materials.
"We urge well-wishers to step forward and contribute to this noble cause," said Timothy Mwale, the foundation's founder and executive director.
"These orphans desperately need our help to continue their education."
Somiso Mvula, the primary education advisor for Bwengu zone, commended the initiative, calling for collective action to tackle challenges facing local students and restore the area's reputation for feeding top national secondary schools.
Traditional Authority Jalavikuba Mthali pledged to work with the organization on establishing by-laws to curb high dropout rates in his jurisdiction, which he described as a major concern.
The fundraising campaign will culminate with a charity walk on May 30 involving all stakeholders. Orphans of Africa is also accepting online donations for the drive.
In addition to education support, the NGO provides sexual and reproductive health awareness programs from its Bwengu office. Since 2017, it has facilitated university admission for four orphans and currently supports 18 orphans in secondary schools.
