Malawi National Spelling Bee Competition Seeks to Promote Reading and Writing Culture
The goal is to promote the reading and writing culture in the country and to select a team to represent Malawi at the African Spelling Bee in Ethiopia.
Malawi: The Malawi National Spelling Bee competition, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, is encouraging the registration of learners to participate in this year's competition, writes Bridget Mwanoka.
The goal is to promote the reading and writing culture in the country and to select a team to represent Malawi at the African Spelling Bee in Ethiopia.
Malawi National Spelling Bee Chief Executive Officer and African Spelling Bee Chairman Lewis Mbaula said, "As you are aware, Malawi came second last year in a competition participated in by 10 African countries, so if we put together the best team this year, chances are high that we can do better."
The National Spelling Bee was introduced in Malawi as a way to improve the country's reading culture, which was in decline, and to provide edutainment programs on television.
Mbaula said, "The competition is instrumental in promoting children's participation in literary activities, building vocabulary, confidence, and public speaking, and exposing learners to different aspects of life."
In addition to promoting reading and writing culture, the competition also helps to build confidence and connect African children.
Mbaula encourages learners from all walks of life to participate, saying, "The National Spelling Bee is a wonderful opportunity for learners to develop their skills and show off their talents."
The Ministry of Education and Spelling Bee organizers say they are committed to supporting the competition and encouraging participation from as many learners as possible.
