Malawi MP Donates 300 Mattresses to Boost Girls' Education
Mwambande urged school management and students to maintain the mattresses properly, emphasizing their importance in promoting education in the region.
KARONGA, Malawi— A member of parliament in northern Malawi has donated 300 mattresses to three secondary schools, aiming to improve girls' access to education and reduce dropout rates, writes Lusekero Mhango.
Mngasulwa Mwambande, who represents Karonga North Constituency, distributed 100 mattresses each to Iponga, Kaporo, and Lufiliya Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSS) through the Constituency Development Fund.
"The students were suffering a lot having to sleep on the floor, which was not ideal," Mwambande said Wednesday.
"Hence the donation, as I want to promote education, especially girl child education."
The initiative targets girls who travel long distances to attend classes, allowing them to reside closer to their schools.
Dan Kanyimbo, headteacher at Iponga CDSS, welcomed the donation.
"This is the only secondary school in the area of Traditional Authority Mwakaboko," he said. "As such, we have a lot of students traveling long distances to attend classes. Hence, the timely donation will allow our students to reside at our boarding facility."
Tamara Kadewere, head girl at Lufiliya CDSS, expressed gratitude for the improved sleeping conditions.
"Sleeping on the mattresses will bring the needed comfort during study at night or at dawn," she said.
Mwambande urged school management and students to maintain the mattresses properly, emphasizing their importance in promoting education in the region.
