Malawi Mourns Loss of Respected Football Leader Othaniel Hara

MZIMBA, Malawi— The funeral ceremony for Othaniel Hara, a revered public figure in Malawi, was a poignant and heartfelt event that brought together family, friends, colleagues, and community members to honour his memory, writes Tionge Hara.
Hara, aged 56, tragically passed away in a road accident at Edundu, TA Mtwalo in Mzimba, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to his country.
Throughout his life, Hara held various influential roles that showcased his commitment to sports, education, and community development.
From serving as the Former second vice president of the Football Association of Malawi to leading the Timbers Association, his impact on the sporting community was profound.
Additionally, his contributions as a Lecturer at Mzuzu University and a teacher at Viphya and secondary schools underscored his passion for education and nurturing young minds.
His presidency at the Mzuzu Golf Club further exemplified his dedication to promoting sports and recreation.
During the funeral ceremony, touching tributes were shared, highlighting Hara's kindness, dedication, and unwavering passion for his work.

"He loved football so much and he was very dedicative and always eager to deliver," said Walter Nyamilandu, the former president of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
"His two terms that he served as the second vice president proved his good deeds."
Representing Mzuzu University, officials also emphasized Hara's greatness, while Inkosi Mtwalo, visibly saddened, said, "He loved his people, God, football, culture - you name it. He was always there. We have lost a great man of the soil."
As the community mourned Hara's passing, they also found solace in remembering his legacy, which will continue to inspire others to strive for excellence and make a difference in their respective fields.
Hara is survived by his wife and two sons, Chatonda and Othaniel.
Among the notable attendees at the funeral ceremony were Former Vice President Khumbo Kachali, Minister of Defense Harry Mkandawire, FAM Second Vice President Lameck Zetu Khonje, and former FAM President Walter Nyamilandu, along with officials from the Northern Region Football Association.
