Malawi Minister Commissions Boreholes to Improve Rural Water Access
The new water sources are expected to significantly improve access to safe, clean water for the local communities.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi — Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia commissioned new boreholes in Chikwawa Nkombezi, aimed at reducing the distance residents must travel for clean water, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The project, located in Senior Chief Ngabu's area, was funded by the Malawi Relief Fund UK (MRF UK).
"I'm grateful for the gesture set by the Malawi Relief Fund UK in the constituency," said Mia, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nkombezi.
Aishah Missi, administration officer for MRF UK, said the organization responded to a request from the local parliamentarian.
She urged community members to maintain the boreholes.
"Let us see that our children are not playing on the boreholes, which may lead to their destruction," Missi said.
Group Village Headman Paiva expressed gratitude on behalf of residents, noting that water scarcity had been a major challenge in the area.
"The water from the drilled boreholes is fresh and free from salt," the traditional leader said.
The new water sources are expected to significantly improve access to safe, clean water for the local communities.
