Malawi minister breaks ground on new health center in rural Chikwawa
The Matsukambiya Health Centre will be constructed with funding from the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) program.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi— Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving healthcare access across Malawi during a groundbreaking ceremony for a new health center on Tuesday, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The K146 million facility at Matsukambiya in Chikwawa district aims to reduce travel distances for medical care, particularly benefiting women in the area.
"It is (my) wish that health care is being done within a distance so that people, especially women, are not walking longer distances to access services," Mia said.
Mia, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Nkombezi, highlighted the project as fulfilling a campaign promise.
She announced plans to construct two houses for medical personnel once the health center is completed.
Chikwawa District Commissioner Nardin Kamba praised Mia's development efforts in the constituency.
"There are many projects being sunk in the area because of the commitment of the parliamentarian," Kamba said.
