Malawi Launches Roadmap to Feed All Students by 2030
Government officials expressed confidence in achieving full coverage, emphasizing that success depends on continued commitment from all stakeholders.
LILONGWE, MALAWI — The Malawian government unveiled an ambitious national school meals program expansion plan Thursday, targeting comprehensive student nutrition coverage by 2030, writes Ireen Kayira.
Current initiatives provide daily nutritious meals to 1.9 million children, representing 46% of eligible learners nationwide.
The Ministry of Education's comprehensive roadmap aims to extend coverage to 100% of students nationwide.
"We desire to provide quality education, but that quality requires learners to be in class," said Mangani Chilala Katundu, Secretary for the Ministry of Education.
"Attendance and concentration need to improve, and school meals play a crucial role in achieving that."
The expansion strategy involves strategic partnerships with international organizations including World Vision, Mary's Meals, the World Food Programme, and Nascent Solutions.
These collaborations are critical to scaling the initiative to reach every eligible student.
Dr. Thomas Munthali from the National Planning Commission highlighted the program's alignment with Malawi Vision 2063, which prioritizes human capital development.
"If we don't invest in children now, we risk having a future where today's children cannot contribute effectively to Malawi's progress," Munthali said.
The program extends beyond nutrition, serving as a critical intervention in rural and underserved areas where schools often provide not just education, but essential nourishment and hope.
Government officials expressed confidence in achieving full coverage, emphasizing that success depends on continued commitment from all stakeholders.
