LILONGWE, MALAWI — In a bid to strengthen its international standing in the sport of Taekwondo, Malawi has made significant investments in development and capacity building, writes Romeo Umali.
The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) recently organised a week-long refresher course for coaches, aligning with their comprehensive strategic plan.
Malawi has witnessed a surge in Taekwondo's popularity, with local athletes gaining recognition and securing multiple medals in international competitions.
To sustain this success, the MOC is taking a proactive approach by focusing on the development of skilled coaches.
Japie Mhango, President of the Malawi Olympic Committee, emphasised the significance of corporate support in propelling individual sporting disciplines forward.
Mhango's vision aligns with the evidence that Malawi excels when provided with the necessary resources and sponsorship.
The Taekwondo Association of Malawi has been at the forefront of driving this transformative journey.
Tichitechi Chitty Nkhwazi, the President of the association, highlighted the importance of certifying coaches to achieve their shared vision of success.
Edgar Mayamba, the trainer responsible for conducting the refresher course, stressed the need for athletes and coaches to be on par in terms of knowledge and expertise.
This investment in professional development will ensure that Malawian athletes receive the guidance and support they need to excel in international competitions.
Commenting on these developments, Herbert Katanda, a Sports Analyst and journalist, expressed optimism for Taekwondo's future in Malawi.
"With the support of the MOC, the Taekwondo Association of Malawi, and individuals like Edgar Mayamba, the future of Taekwondo in Malawi looks promising," Katanda stated.
Malawi currently holds the 142nd position in the World Taekwondo Rankings.
With these strategic investments, the nation aims to improve its standing and establish itself as a formidable force in the sport.
