Malawi Insurers Launch Digital Vehicle Certificates to Fight Fraud
The digital certificates will allow motorists to obtain documentation remotely and help authorities track stolen vehicles.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Insurance Association of Malawi (IAM) has introduced digital motor vehicle insurance certificates in a move to combat fraud and align with national digitalization goals, writes Martha Nakhate.
The initiative supports recommendations in the Malawi 2063 agenda and Reserve Bank guidelines for businesses to adopt digital systems.
IAM Secretary Darles Kuyokwa told stakeholders on Wednesday that the digital certificates will streamline services and enhance security.
"The system will help decrease fraud and forgery and will also help to save importing costs of pre-printed discs for certificates," Kuyokwa said.
The digital certificates will allow motorists to obtain documentation remotely and help authorities track stolen vehicles.
Superintendent Samuel Phiri of Lingadzi Police Station welcomed the change.
"In the past, some fraudsters would give us papers that seemed authentic while in reality they were fake documents, but now we will be able to verify," Phiri said.
