Malawi Hospital Plans Self-Sufficiency with Farming, Livestock Initiative

RUMPHI, Malawi— Rumphi District Hospital aims to supplement its budget by producing its own food, officials said Tuesday, writes Manasse Nyirenda, MANA.
Dr. Arnold Jumbe, Director of Health and Social Services for Rumphi District Council, revealed plans to grow maize and rear livestock in the upcoming farming season.
"Government funds will never be enough and as a facility we need to do something to support government's efforts as part of our reform areas," Jumbe said during a visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Health.
The hospital also plans to offer paid maternal services to generate additional revenue.
Eurita Valeta, team leader of the committee, praised the initiative. The committee is investigating allegations that some health facilities provide only one meal per day to patients.
"We will be meeting Ministry of Health on Thursday to brief them on our findings and map the way forward," Valeta said.
Rumphi District Hospital, operating since 1970, serves about 250 patients daily.
