LILONGWE, Malawi — The Ministry of Health recognized five districts Friday for outstanding performance in immunization programs during the 2023/2024 fiscal year, writes Abraham Bisayi.
At an event in Lilongwe, Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daud emphasized the importance of immunization in preventing diseases and promoting child development.
"Good immunization coverage will ultimately prevent the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases like polio, measles and neonatal tetanus," Daud said.
The awarded districts are:
- Rumphi (Northern Zone)
- Nkhotakota (Central East Zone)
- Ntcheu (Central West Zone)
- Balaka (South East Zone)
- Blantyre (South West Zone)
Arnold Jumbe, Director of Health Services for Rumphi district council, attributed their success to teamwork and effective collaboration among disease control services.
Daud urged other districts to learn from the top performers and strive for improvement.
The awards program, championed by the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) with funding from GAVI, previously honoured Kasungu and Chiradzulu districts in 2022/2023.
