Malawi govt responds to flood victims in Ngabu area
In addition to the government response, Mia earlier shared flour at the camps using personal resources.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - The Malawi government has started responding to people affected by floods in Senior Chief Ngabu's area in Chikwawa district that left three people dead and thousands of families homeless, according to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, writes Moses Thole.
Following a request by the area's members of parliament Illias Abdul Karim (Chikwawa South) and Abida Mia (Chikwawa Nkombedzi), who is also the Minister of Water and Sanitation, President Lazarus Chakwera intervened.
"When we received the news about the floods we firstly notified the District Commissioner of Chikwawa who paid a visit on the same day. I also contacted President Chakwera on the same," Mia stated during food distribution at camps in her area today.
Over 1,000 families have received 50kg bags of maize, portions of beans and plastic rolls so far. Mia used personal funds to transport maize from the Food Reserve Agency in Nsanje for timely delivery.
"We have just received food, so I thought it wise to use personal funds for transportation since it was timely," she disclosed.
Chikwawa District Commissioner Nardin Kamba praised Mia for her commitment to helping constituents but warned camp committee members against involving in corruption, saying action will be taken.
In addition to the government response, Mia earlier shared flour at the camps using personal resources.
