Malawi government to construct mausoleum for Gwanda Chakuamba
Government plans to construct a mausoleum at the residence of Late Gwanda Chakuamba in Nsanje to honour his contributions.
NSANJE, MALAWI —The government of Malawi has announced plans to construct a mausoleum for the late Gwanda Chakuamba, a former vice-president of the country, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Chakuamba, who died in 2016, was a prominent politician who served in the government of Hastings Kamuzu Banda and later led the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the 1994 elections.
The mausoleum will be built at Chakuamba's residence in Chinyanje, located in the area of Senior Chief Mlolo in Nsanje.
Government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu said that the mausoleum was a tribute to Chakuamba's "significant contributions" to the MCP and the country as a whole.
"The government of Malawi appreciates the contributions made by the Late Gwanda Chakuamba to the MCP and the country as a whole," Kunkuyu said.
"As a tribute, plans are underway to construct a mausoleum at his residence in Chinyanje."
Kunkuyu also expressed disappointment in individuals who had sought to exploit the mausoleum for political gain.
"It is sad that some people would like to politicise the matter of the mausoleum of the Late Chakuamba to gain political favour," he said.
"However, we assure the nation that the necessary processes are underway to complete the final resting place for the Late Gwanda Chakuamba."
The mausoleum is expected to be completed in the coming months.
