Malawi government happy with farmers' response to mega-farms project, writes Chifundo Kudzula Gondwe.
Lilongwe, Malawi - The Malawi government has expressed satisfaction with the number of medium-scale farmers that have submitted applications for the mega-farms project, writes Chifundo Kudzula Gondwe.
The Controller of Agriculture Extension and Technical Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Alfred Mwenifumbo, made the sentiments as they are expected to close the application period on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
According to Mwenifumbo, the applications targeted farmers with 20 hectares or more.
"We are glad that most farmers across the country have responded positively to our call for the implementation of the mega farmers," said Mwenifumbo.
He added that the application process is being handled by the eight agriculture divisions across the country.
Some agriculture commentators have been urging the government to speed up the execution of the mega-farms with the aim of making Malawi a food-reliant nation.
The Mega Farms Project is President Lazarus Chakwera's dream to counter food insecurity challenges.
