Malawi Government Commences M5 Road Reconstruction, Boosting Traffic Flow and Economy
Local Residents and Commuters Anticipate Improved Traffic Flow and Economic Development as Government Begins M5 Road Construction Project, writes Fegson Phabuli.
SALIMA, MALAWI - The long-awaited reconstruction of the 60-kilometre Kaphatenga-Benga (M5) road in Salima and Nkhotakota districts has commenced, as the Malawi government, through the Roads Authority, has partnered with China Railway 20 (CR20), a Chinese company, for the project, writes Fegson Phabuli.
With a budget of approximately 37 billion Malawi Kwacha, the construction is expected to span over a two-year period, with completion slated for November 17, 2024.
In an effort to raise awareness and garner support from key stakeholders and communities, the Roads Authority organized an awareness drive on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.
Portia Kajanga, Senior Public Relations Officer for the Roads Authority, explained the purpose of the event, stating, "We wanted the community to be well aware of the project and, of course, calling for support and collaboration so that the development meets their needs and priorities."
Emphasizing the need for a professional and ethical relationship between the community and the road contractors, Edwin Kasiyafumbi, Salima Social Welfare Officer, urged the community to refrain from engaging in sexual relationships or marriages with the contractors during the construction phase.
"These, among other issues, put lives at risk of contracting existing or new diseases," he emphasized.
Expressing his excitement for the project, Traditional Authority Khombedza highlighted the potential benefits it will bring to the community.
"This will attract various businesses, creating new job opportunities and driving economic growth in both districts," he said.
The project, which has been eagerly awaited by local residents and commuters, is expected to improve traffic flow and spur economic development in the area.
With completion scheduled for November 17, 2024, the community looks forward to the positive impact the reconstructed M5 road will have on their lives.
