Malawi Gears Up for 2024 Tchove Tchove Mega Race, Organizers Say
Over 50 cyclists have registered for the event, competing for medals, cash prizes, and other awards.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Preparations are complete for the 2024 Tchove Tchove Mega Race, a major cycling event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12, in Lilongwe, organizers announced Wednesday, writes Happy Valirani.
The race, sponsored by Farmers World & AGORA Limited in partnership with the Cycling Federation of Malawi (CFM), will feature a 100-kilometre professional course and a 10-kilometre social ride. Both races will start from the Farmers World Head offices in Kanengo.
Vitumbiko Mtonga, Marketing Manager for Farmers World & Agora Limited and organizing chair, told AfricaBrief, "The preparations have been going so well. Tchove Tchove aims to target the rural communities we serve."
Mtonga added, "We have two categories: singles and group categories. The Singles category, which is the Mountain Bike category, will use mountain bikes only. The second one, which is the group category, will use road bikes only."
Over 50 cyclists have registered for the event, competing for medals, cash prizes, and other awards.
Sponsors include Superfert Fertilizer, FDH Bank, Coca-Cola Company, Bayer, BIKETECH, Farm Services Unit, CFM, AECI, and General Alliance Insurance Limited.
CFM President Malombo Kayira praised the event's timing, saying, "We expect these young riders of between 18-23 years to go to Tanzania and also commonwealth games slated for 2025 in Scotland."
Captain Steven Nazombe, a participant from Blantyre Cycling Club, expressed confidence in his chances to win the male category.
Nazombe, who won the Tour de Dwangwa race in Nkhotakota in September, commended the organizers for promoting cycling in Malawi.
The Tchove Tchove Mega Race caps off a series of smaller races held in districts like Mangochi and Ntchisi since early September.
