Malawi Gaming Authority Reports K12 Billion Annual Gambling Revenue
The World Health Organization estimates the global gambling economy will reach $700 billion by 2028.
MZUZU, Malawi— Malawi's gambling industry generates approximately K12 billion annually, with K4.5 billion directed to government as surplus, the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) reported Thursday, writes Victor Musongole.
Speaking during a media interaction, MAGLA's Acting Director of Legal and Regulatory Services, Owen Chuma, emphasised that gambling should be viewed as entertainment, not a primary income source.
"While we are talking of income through tax by government, people should not take gambling as a source of income but rather as entertainment," Chuma said.
The authority reported treating five individuals for gambling addiction in 2024, anticipating global industry growth.

MAGLA Licensing and Compliance Manager Miriam Kumbuyo acknowledged regulatory challenges, noting the rapid evolution of gambling practices outpacing legal frameworks.
Feston Malekezo, Chairperson of Nyika Media Club, praised the session for enhancing journalists' understanding of gambling regulations and promoting responsible gambling awareness.
As a statutory body established by the parliamentary act, MAGLA continues to regulate gaming and lottery activities nationwide.
