Malawi First Lady to Launch Anti-Gender Violence Campaign in Phalombe
The campaign runs from Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, through Dec. 10, Human Rights Day.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi will launch its annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign on Monday, with First Lady Monica Chakwera set to preside over the ceremony in Phalombe district, writes Esther Banda.
Minister of Gender Jean Sendeza announced Friday that the event will take place at Mpasa Community Day Secondary School under the global theme "Towards 30 Years of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls."
"The government will continue to develop, review and implement laws, policies, strategies and programs aimed at eliminating GBV and promoting women and girls' rights," Sendeza said during a press briefing at Capital Hill.
Malawi has localized the campaign theme to "Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls in Malawi," emphasizing the country's commitment to addressing gender-based violence.
"Let us all unite, invest and take action in ending gender-based violence by holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring survivors have access to gender-responsive remedies," Sendeza said.
World Vision's Advocacy Campaigns and Safeguarding Manager Lizzie Lombe said her organization will focus on addressing child hunger and malnutrition during the campaign period.
"Our great emphasis is to ensure that we address the gender nutrition gap that exists, which ultimately leads to children being malnourished," Lombe said.
The campaign runs from Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, through Dec. 10, Human Rights Day.
