Malawi Finance Minister Vows Party Rebuild in MCP Secretary General Bid
The MCP is preparing for its internal elections amid efforts to strengthen its position ahead of future national polls.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi's Finance Minister Simplex Chithyola Banda pledged to rebuild the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) if elected as secretary general during the upcoming party convention, writes Esther Banda.
Banda, who also serves as a legislator for MCP, made the promise Saturday while submitting his nomination papers at the party headquarters.
"Today's submission demonstrates my acceptance to serve at that highest level to rebuild the party and support the president in running this country and the party much better," Banda said.
The convention is scheduled for Aug. 8.
Banda emphasized the need for change within the party.
"As we start the journey of rebuilding, it marks the beginning of changing many things in our party. Everything must change for the better," he said.
The finance minister stressed the importance of maintaining a strong party to retain power.
"It's our desire to maintain and return government, which can only be done when we have the strongest party and systems that respond to people's needs," Banda added.
Patrick Zebron Chilondola, MCP's Central Region chairperson, cautioned candidates and supporters against creating division during the internal campaign.
"Candidates must concentrate on issue-based campaigning. No castigations because this is an inside campaign," Chilondola said, urging unity among party members.
