Malawi Expands Mzuzu Airport to Boost Northern Region Air Travel
Mzuzu, as the major commercial centre in northern Malawi, stands to benefit from increased connectivity and tourism opportunities.
MZUZU, Malawi— A major airport rehabilitation project in Malawi's northern region is nearing completion, with larger aircraft expected to resume landings within two weeks, Transport Minister Jacob Hara announced Tuesday, writes Tionge Hara.
During an inspection of the Mzuzu Airport renovation works, Hara expressed satisfaction with the project's progress despite initial delays.
"The contractors have assured my ministry that the runway will be opened for bigger flights to land in Mzuzu City within 14 working days," he said.
The 1.4 billion kwacha ($840,000) project includes extending the runway from 1,300 to 1,700 meters and renovating the facility's infrastructure.
Commercial flights to the northern region were previously suspended due to the airport's deteriorating condition.
Nasudu Construction is handling the rehabilitation work, which began in late 2024.
Project contractor Abdul Juma said the upgrades will significantly impact local communities.
The expanded runway will accommodate larger aircraft, a key development for the region's economic prospects.
