Malawi Drawn in Tough Group for COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship
This will be Malawi's first appearance at the COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship.
DURBAN, South Africa- The Malawi Beach Soccer National team has been drawn into a tough Group A for the 2024 COSAFA Cup Championship to be held in Durban, South Africa from March 17-23, writes Happy Valirani.
In Thursday's draw, Malawi was paired alongside the host nation South Africa as well as Saudi Arabia and Seychelles in Group A.
Group B consists of Morocco, Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania.
Malawi's head coach Willy Kumilambe said his team is ready despite facing some unfamiliar opponents.
"The draw has just come out and we have seen it. We are meeting new teams like South Africa, Saudi Arabia whom we have never played before," said Kumilambe.
"To me it's a 50-50 situation where we have never played them and they don't know us as well."
Kumilambe added that preparations have been going well with the team already in camp since February 28th ahead of the tournament.
"We have been in camp for two weeks now. Just two days ago we trimmed the squad and we are very sure that in the coming two days also, we are going to trim the squad to 15 players so that we should have a good squad that will represent us in South Africa," he said.
"The morale in camp is very high and every player is working hard and eagerly to be part of the final squad."
This will be Malawi's first appearance at the COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship.
