LILONGWE, Malawi— The Malawi national darts team is set to compete in the Region 5 Darts Championship in Mbabane, Eswatini, starting Aug. 26, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
The team, consisting of eight players and two officials, along with a sports council representative, will depart Malawi on Saturday.
Joe Zanga Zanga, president of the Darts Association of Malawi and a team player, expressed confidence in an interview.
"The team which has been selected is very promising. We are confident that we are going to compete, not just to participate," Zanga Zanga said.
The team has been in training camp since Aug. 18 under coach Morgan Jiya, who also serves as the association's tournaments director.
Zanga Zanga thanked several sponsors for providing uniforms, cash and other support, including Staff Development Institution, Vox Populi Lounge and Bar, Kurgan, Edge Tech, Vista Print and team matron Dr. Janet Banda.
However, the darts president lamented financial constraints that prevented the inclusion of women's and youth teams.
"This will demotivate them in the long run," he said, urging the corporate sector to support darts and other sports to enhance sporting activities in Malawi.
