Malawi Cultural Group Learns Digital Strategies to Preserve Heritage
Over 10 participants from across Malawi attended the training at Wamkulu Palace, focusing on social media strategies, content development, and online monetization.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM) conducted a two-day workshop to help the Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEFO) improve its digital presence and cultural advocacy, writes Abraham Bisayi.
Over 10 participants from across Malawi attended the training at Wamkulu Palace, focusing on social media strategies, content development, and online monetization.
"Social media is a powerful tool for cultural preservation and transformation," said Alinafe Chibwana, CRECCOM's Executive Director.
He urged participants to use their new skills to challenge cultural myths and inspire change, particularly among younger generations.
Franklin Chilomba, CHEFO's Secretary General, called the workshop an "eye-opener" for the Chewa community in the digital age.
"We are now determined to raise the visibility of our culture," Chilomba said.
USAID supported the workshop through the Milimo Local Capacity Building Project. CRECCOM has previously trained other cultural and heritage associations in similar digital engagement techniques.
Participants learnt strategies for expanding their social media fan base and developing effective online content to promote Chewa's cultural heritage.
This training represents a broader effort to modernise cultural preservation approaches in Malawi, leveraging digital platforms to reach wider audiences.
