Malawi Congress Party Unveils Plans for Billion-Kwacha Convention
This gathering comes as Malawi prepares for general elections on September 16, 2025, where voters will elect the president, members of parliament, and ward councilors.
LILONGWE, Malawi — The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced plans for its upcoming elective convention, with a budget approaching one billion kwacha, writes Martin Kamlaike.
The convention, scheduled for August 8-10, 2024, at the Bingu International Convention Center in Lilongwe, will see party members vying for key leadership positions.
Kezzie Msukwa, chair of the steering committee, addressed media at MCP headquarters, emphasizing the role of the Malawi Electoral Commission in managing the elections.
"We do not want any of the delegates to intimidate each other during the convention, and no one should campaign at the convention because the campaign time will have elapsed," Msukwa stated.
President Lazarus Chakwera will run unopposed for party leadership, while five candidates compete for first vice president, including Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng'oma and Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu.
The party received 224 applications, with 204 approved to compete for various positions.
Msukwa explained, "Vetting of the nomination process has been done by evaluating candidates with regards to experience and loyalty to the party."
Elias Chakwera, director of elections, announced that a voter register will be available to delegates and candidates by Tuesday evening.
He urged candidates to have monitors present during the election.
The convention is expected to host between 1,300 and 1,500 delegates from across the country.
