Malawi Congress Party Confident of 2025 Election Victory, Says Official
The MCP's assertions come as Malawi prepares for its next general elections, scheduled for 2025.
LILONGWE, Malawi — The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) expressed confidence in its ability to secure a landslide victory in the 2025 general elections following the election of new leadership at its recent convention, writes Martin Kamlaike.
Dr. Jessie Kabwila, MCP's newly appointed publicity secretary, addressed journalists at the party's headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday, highlighting the party's commitment to inclusivity and youth representation.
"The purpose of this conference was to communicate that Malawi Congress Party has a National Executive that is ready to make sure that Dr. Lazarus Chakwera wins 2025 and we win in parliament and also at council level," Kabwila said.
She emphasized the party's focus on women and youth in leadership positions, stating, "The youth have actually found a home in the national executive of Malawi Congress Party."
Kabwila cited several achievements of the MCP-led administration, including road construction, reintroduction of carrier trains, and reopening of the school of government.
She also highlighted the increased Constituency Development Fund and the success of the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).
"We have recorded historical repayments rates because Chakwera has made it clear that he is not going to politicize NEEF. NEEF is not going to be a backyard of political people," Kabwila said.
The publicity secretary noted that while MCP is open to electoral alliances, the party is confident in its ability to win the 2025 elections independently.
President Lazarus Chakwera was re-elected unopposed as the party leader during the recent convention.
Kabwila expressed unwavering optimism about the party's prospects, stating, "I think if there was another percentage over 100, I was going to name it. We are very confident, and the reason is simple because we are not sleeping to make sure to deliver to Malawians."
