Malawi Concludes National ID Outreach, Preps for Mop-Up Registration
The NRB reiterated that registration and application forms for national identity documents are free of charge.
LILONGWE, Malawi— The National Registration Bureau (NRB) of Malawi has concluded Phase 8 of its national ID outreach and community death registration exercise in the cities of Lilongwe and Blantyre, marking the end of the nationwide outreach registration drive, writes Winston Mwale.
In a press release Tuesday, the bureau announced that while the outreach has ended, registration services remain available at NRB district offices or selected post offices countrywide.
The NRB also informed the public of an upcoming mop-up registration exercise scheduled to begin in June across all 28 districts.
This four-month nationwide effort aims to register all eligible citizens who missed the outreach registration phase.
"The mop-up registration exercise is set to begin in June 2024 and will be a nationwide exercise that will cover all the centers in all districts in the country for four months," the release stated.
Furthermore, the bureau will distribute national identity cards to citizens who registered during the outreach as well as those who previously registered but have not received their cards.
The NRB reiterated that registration and application forms for national identity documents are free of charge.
It urged the public to report any instances of individuals demanding payment to the nearest police station.
For assistance, citizens can visit their local NRB district office or contact the bureau's call center.
The press release, signed by NRB Principal Secretary MAK Sambo, underscores the government's efforts to ensure all eligible Malawians obtain national identification documents, a crucial step toward promoting social inclusion and access to various services.
