Malawi Civil Society Marks Abortion Ruling Anniversary

DEDZA, Malawi— Civil society organizations in Malawi are commemorating the anniversary of a landmark High Court ruling that clarified exceptions to the country's abortion laws, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
The ruling, issued June 15, 2021, affirmed that mental and physical health are crucial components in preserving life during risky pregnancies.
It provided legal clarity for women seeking abortions due to health risks.
Dr. Godfrey Dalitso Kangaude, Executive Director of Nyale Institute, praised the government for making the clarification public.
Eighteen civil society organizations, including Nyale Institute and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, issued a joint statement calling the ruling a significant milestone for reproductive rights in Malawi.
The groups reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for comprehensive reproductive health rights and access to healthcare without fear for all women and girls in Malawi.
